The Hero Factor

There's this term that they've been throwing around. Friendly fire. I'm really not sure where that comes from...

Dear Pat,

Just wanted to let you know that I've heard about you in the news, lately. Thought I'd pass along my 2¢.

Oh, yes, it comes and goes. Your fame in the news headlines. I heard about you when the incident first happened and before, when you were a star football player. I find it funny, sometimes, how life and death goes. And how the hero factor comes into play, differently for each one, but still, much the same for all.

There's this term that they've been throwing around. Friendly fire. I'm really not sure where that comes from, in regards to the matters of war. There's no friendly fire in war. There's nothing friendly about war in any way, shape, or form.

You entered war knowing full well the risks, responsibilities, and rewards. The day you volunteered was the day that you gave it all.

I just wanted to say thank you to you and your fellow soldiers. I recognize that every day is and was a sacrifice. What direction the bullet came from has nothing to do with the hero factor.

What direction your heart is pointed at has everything to do with the hero factor.

Thank you for the place where your heart was. You laid down everything of fame and fortune to enter a service with a higher calling. You got called higher.

Thank you to your family, who recognized that you had something of a gift for your country, and who let you go. May they be embraced by the fact that you had the hero factor, because of the place where your heart was.

Yes, thank you to all the families and to all the Pat Tillman's, from many different walks of life. Thank you for everything you do.

Sincerely,

A Grateful Citizen
